Sound Intensity Definition
Intensity of sound: The intensity of sound wave (I) at a point is defined as the amount of sound energy (Q) flowing per second per unit are held normally at the point to the direction of the propagation of the sound wave.
The intensity of sound definition is represented as
I=`Q/(tA)`
Here the sound energy is denoted as Q and the time is denoted as t.The area of the sound is A.
Definition of intensity of sound:
Intensity pf sound is one of the measurable quantity.
Unit of intensity of sound: joule second^-1 metre^-2 or watt metre^-2 .
Intensity I=`P/A`
The intensity is the physical quantity whereas the loudness is physiological quantity. Because the loudness cannot be measurable. But it is possible by finding the logarithmic value of intensity.
Definition of sound intensity level:
Sound intensity level:
The absolute intensity should be measured in terms of Watt/metre2 . Intensity of sound is measured with the help of standard intensity which has the value I0=10-12 watt metre-2. This intensity is considered as lowest intensity which is capable of hearing by human. The other name of this standard is threshold of audibility.
Sound intensity is the ratio taken between the intensity of sound and the standard intensity.
Representation of sound intensity level:
Sound intensity level `beta`=`I/(I_0)`
where I is the intensity of sound and I0 is the standard intensity of sound.
`beta`=`log_10I/(I_0)`
Unit of sound intensity level: bel.It is because the inventor name Alexander Graham Bell.
That is,
`beta`= `log_10[I/(I_0)]` bel
Assume the sound intensity I=10I0
Then the sound intensity level is
`beta`=`log_10[(10I_0)/(I_0)]`
`beta`= log1010
`beta`=1bel
As a result the definition of 1bel is happen if there is a 10 times difference between the two sound notes.
The unit bel has a larger value. Hence the another unit decibel is used.
1 bel =10 decibles
That is 10 decibels equals the 1 bel.
